ghost tours, swells, campfires and more!

We had to see goodbye to Melbourne and our newly made friends and continue our trip up North. Walhalla was our final destination for today. According to the Lonely planet ( our BFF), Walhalla is “Victoria’s most historic and charming town”. Walhalla was a gold town and at its peak bigger than Melbourne. Currently the population is 16.........

We found a nice free camping spot at the end of town and setup camp. In the evening we walked back ( with about 6 layers on cuz it is COLD!) as we booked a ghost tour. WHA HA HA HA HA ....anyways.. ;) We learned a lot about the town and its ghost, and even though i don’t really believe in them it still felt eerie walking through the woods in pitch-dark.

The next day we visited one of the Mine-shafts of Walhalla which was really interesting. Learning about the way they lived, made the mineshaft and looked for gold ( it took them 6 years to find the gold) was actually quite shocking.

We continued our trip up north but were hit with a COLD front ;) Ok so maybe not so cold but still colder than I imagined Australia to be. SO that newly-bought warm sweater was very much appreciated!. At this point we were also a bit sick of the smell coming out of our aircon. So Remco was on a mission t find out what... well the picture will tell all:

We hit rainy Mallacoota ( not so nice when it rains) and headed further up to Jervis Bay for a nice swell. We had passed a very flat Bells beach (surfers paradise.. when it is not flat) so Maaike was dying to get on her surfboard. The last days we stayed at 2 different campings and Maaike’s friend Hans joined us. When they went on “the search” (which is a term for surfers when they are looking for a nice swell), we went a bit more inland and visited the tiny village Kangaroo Valley.

OUr last camping before we went our seperate ways was near wollongong ( i know the names are so coo arent'they!) and has the most spectacular view... We enjoyed our fire, wine and a gorgeous sunset.... :)

On the 18^th we arrived in the biggest city of Australia.... SYDNEY!

♫ Big city.... BIG BIG CITY ♫

Date: 9^th April – 12^th of April

We are in Melbourne!!!!Melbourne is the city of cafe’s and restaurants... sounds horrible. Unfortunately Melbourne is also a city of .. RAIN! Haven’t seen so much rain in a while! Thank god we don’t have to camp outside!. We met some lovely people and they invited us to stay with them. This means an actually table for dinner, no breaking down of the tent etc in the morning and Maaike even had a real mattressJ. We started of in St Kilda, browsing through a street market ( LOVE IT) and ending up having lunch in a nice place in St Kilda. 

We also visited the Royal botanical Gardens which are truly beautiful (and free). Getting about and about is pretty easy as they have a good metro system going on here and on Sunday a ticket is only $3 (aussie dollars). In the evening we had a really nice dinner and ended up drinking a beer in a place close to st Kilda... well that ended up being 1 beer only......wrong club!

Visiting the “Melbourne museum” was a real highlight. This museum isn’t your typical museum ( old paintings etc etc). It focussed more on the history of the knowledge about our brains, dreams and even mental diseases. We also saw a lot of dead animals but it was really nicely done. Another part was the “bug section”. Seriously that department gave me the creeps and a serious itch everywhere! We Know that Australia has a lot of dangerous animals (we are being reminded everyday!) well we saw many of them in the “bug section”. Yikes! They had some really cool green beetles as well...see those I like! They don’t kill you! Did I mention that most of the bugs in that section were actually alive?

Melbourne is a very nice city. Not too big and not too small, you can find your cosy streets and corner pubs. Of course we did have a beer in a typical big sports Cafe and watch Australian Footy ( yes it exists and is a mixture between rugby and american football. Most striking of all... the field is round!!!) . Needles to say we didn't understand any of the rules... well actually the main rule seemed to be : There ain't any!

Great Ocean Roading!

Location: KI to Mebourne – Great Ocean Road

Date: 4^th April – 9^th of April

Thursday

Today we will start driving the infamous “great ocean road”. This is probably the most well-known road here in Australia, which does result having  a “look out” or viewing point about every kilometre J . For some reason there is a good representation of the Asians and the French. We are starting to see a fair bit more backpackers as well. We even saw 3 more Spacecars, but we were very disappointed that one of the space cars was actually called “the flying Dutchmen”. Needless to say we really wanted that one ;)

We did give in to stopping at a few viewpoints ( hey we are tourists after all) and we were not surprised to see that the view was stunning. 

We had lunch on the beach after which we continued our drive to the 12 apostles another very famous spot along the great ocean road.  We arrived at the end of the day and the light was spectacular, however a bit foggy. It is a shame that these “rocks” might not be here anymore in a couple of decades. Hey it is all in the hands of nature. The force of the ocean is actually breaking them down. The last to go down was in 2005, not too long ago.

In the evening we found a free camping spot near a popular surfing beach in Johana. We did notice that we see a fair bit more rednecks ( aso typetjes voor de nederlanders)in this area. We already got a middle finger ( he wanted to point out that we were not welcome to camp next to him), and Maaike was cursed away from a wave whilst body-boarding the next day. However they can be very nice as well. When we stopped to unpack at a very full campsite the toothless father of the family next to us, who had just walked his rat euh dog, advised us to go a bit further as there were some nicer spots there. If he knew this earlier he would have ( these were his words) “taken me misses and me kids “ to that spot. Do I hear the English accent creeping through?? We were actually not very sad to leave that spot as were facing their compost loo and the fumes of the generator.... not very romantic right mate? In the evening we had wine and local cheese for dinner...hmmm lovely!

Australie het land van schattig en doodeng

Australie heeft de meest knuffelbare dieren maar ook de meest gevaarlijke dieren. Daar worden we dagelijks aan herrinerd door de Australier ( volgens mij zijn ze er gewoon stieken trots op).  Wij hebben al menig dier gezien.

De Possum is hier een veelvoorkomend diertje dat niet bang is. Ze zijn harstikke nieuwschierig en doen alles voor eten. Dus als dat inhoud dat ze bij je op tafel moeten springen dan doen ze datJ. We hebben er al een onder de auto gehad, op de tafel gehad, onder de tafel gehad, zelfs een die tegen maaike’s tent aan het leunen was. Alles behalve bang!

De Koala beer, tja die is gewoon heel schattig, kknuffelig maar bovenal heel LUI! Hij eet ongeveer 2 uur per dag en de rest van de dag brengt hij slapen door in een boom. Ze maken snachts echt oergeluiden ( de mannatjes) en geven erniet om als het vrouwtje is geen zin heeft ( het fenomeen “ik heb hoofdpijn” gaat niet op bij meneer de koala). We hebben al menig encounter gehad met deze beestjes. Een van de leukste was toen we in het gbied van het national park Otwa naar een vuurtoren reden en ze echt om de meter wel in ene boom zaten. We hebben onze ogen uitgekeken. En ook in de meest rare houdingen .... ik denk dat het Yoga dieren zijn.

De Kangaroo is een nachtdier ( dat wist ik dus niet). Het grppige is van deze beetjes dat het ltijd lijkt alsof ze niet in het wild zijn ( in een weiland omgeven dor hekken), maar ze houden van graasgras dus als dat betekend dat ze een leeg weiland ( wat dus normaal voor koeien of schapen is) moeten invaden dan doen ze dat. Ze wippen heel behendig door de bedrading heen en gaan heerlijk liggen grazen. Ook deze dieren kunnen in hun rustperiode echt heel Lui zijn.

De Walibi is eigelijk een kleine kangaroo. Deze hubt ook iets meer rond op de campings. Hij loopt ook anders ( gebruikt zijn staart minder als evenwichts orgaan).

De Papagaaien  heb je hier echt in alle maten en soorten. Dat hadden wij helemaal niet verwacht. Je hebt de witte kackatoo’s de zwarte, kleine papagaaitjes in echt alle soorten en kleuren. Sommige zijn echt HEEEEEL luidruchtig ( zucht de witte kakatoo!!) en sommige zijn gewoon heel tuti J

Ja dat waren dan de schattige ( hoog op onze lijst om nog te zien is de Wombat... onze missie zet zich voort!) diertjes. Dan heb je nog de slangen en de spinnen, de duizendpoten en de schorpioenen, de haaien en de krokidillen. Tja.......

We hebben al menig spin gezien ( ik denk maar even niet aan wat voor spin het geweest kan zijn). Er zijn vlink wat spinnen waar je niet bang voor hoeft te zijn maar van de 1500 spinsoorten die hier leven is de helft giftig... das toch wel veel niet? Sommige spinnen zijn zelfs zo giftig dat na een beet je binnen 6 uur dood bent... en oh er is geen tegengif!

De meesten slangen zijn niet giftig maar toch zie ik op een website dat er van de top 10 dodelijkste slangen er hier 8 wonen. Dus....... ok geen lieverdjes waar je mee moet gaan buiten spelen! We hebben al een gevaarlijk slangetje gezien nl de Red Belly snake. Wikepedia zegt: “The Red-bellied Black Snake, Pseudechis porphyriacus, is a species of elapid snake native to eastern Australia. Though its venom is capable of causing significant morbidity, it is not generally fatal and less venomous than other deadly Australian snakes.” Gelukkig zaten wij hoog en droog in de auto J 

Tja de haaien en de krokodillen gaan we maar niet bij stil staan. Want zwemmen doen we toch wel. Gelukkig hebben haaien het meer voorzien op surfers ( die lijken op zeehonden als je ze van onder bekijkt en laat dat nou net een lekker hapje zijn voor de haai) dan duikers.

Natuurlijk zijn er nog veeeeeel meer beestjes hier maar dit was een klein greepje uit het beestenboek J

Zwemmen in het water, spitter spetter spater!

Location: KI to Mebourne

Date: 4^th April – 9^th of April

Maandag

Na KI rijden we nu richting Victor Harbour. Daar dag-trippen alle Adelaidiens naar. De Ferry tocht was behoorlijk rocky geweest maar gelukkig hadden wij er geen last van. Boven op het dek stonden wel wat mensen groen en geel te wezen however. We hebben ook nog een seal gezien die ons even groette tegen het einde van de trip toen we even boven waren wezen kijken.Echt super! Toen we richting Victor harbour reden hadden we een flinke wind en schoof het surfboard lekker op en neer. Doodeng. Eenmaal aangekomen in het dorpje schene het zonnetje heerlijk! We hebben in het dorp ook maar mobiel internet gekocht ( wat hier dan weer eigenlijk best goedkoop is) want de mac internet is alleen maar frustrerend!  We hebben ook meteen onze vooraad aangevuld want die was na 4 dagen KI toch echt wat oppig. We hebben flink wat opbergruimte in de van en ook een koelkastje ( een schattig klein ding). Onze van heeft ook 2 accu’s, een voor de auto en eentje voor alle apparatuur wat ontzetten handig is want die kan je gewoon helemal op makn zonder dat je bang bent dat je auto niet eer start. Accu 2 gaat wel klikken savonds als hijj leeg is dus zetten we hem toch wel even uit anders word je er een beetje “geklikt” van snachts.

We hadden uiteindelijk een gratis campingplekje gevonden vlak bij een “winery” (ook niet geheel onbelangrijk).

 Even een notitie; we denken dat er ergens een muis is ingekropen want onze auto stinkt naar dood dier! Hmmmmm word vast vervolgd.

Dinsdag

vandaag willen we naar Mount Gambier rijden dat is een tip die we gekregen hebben en waar je ook in “sincholes” kan zwemmen. We zullen daar waarschijnlijk 2 dagjes blijven dus we gaan op zoek naar een camping met faciliteiten. Want na een koud zwemtochtje willen we vast even warm douchen. In ons grote camping book hadden we een camping gevonden vlak bij Nelson. Mooi die doen we dan. Vlak bij de camping ligt Mount Gambier, en op de weg naar Nelson reden we door het dorp heen. Hier ligt het beroemde Blue lake. Dat is een krater gevuld met water en in de zomermaanden is dit water helblauw, en in de wintermaanden is het gewoon waterkleur. Wij wren er in de nazomer dus konden nog een glimpjse zien van het blauwe water.

Woensdag

Vandaag gaan we zwemmen in de beroemde “sinkholes”. Deze “holes” onstaan eigenlijk door de vele grotten die hier in de omgeving zijn. Op een gegeven moment zakt het dak in van zon gat en zie daar een “sinkhole”. We moesten wel even wetsuits huren want het water ( zoet weliswaar) zo zo’n 14 graden zijn. Dus bepakt en bezakt het water in ( lees hoody, 5mm wetsuit, schoentjes, vinnen, handschoenen en duikbril) . Het water was zo koud dat de behuizing van onze camera er spontaan van besloeg!. De eerste ponds die we bezochten was Ewans ponds. Dit zijn in principe 3 sinkholes die door kleine riviertjes met elkaar verbonden zijn. Het zwemmen van Pond naar Pond was eigenlijk nog het leukst. Het water was super helder en had een hele andere vegetatie dan wat we normaal zien tidens het snorkelen. Remco had zelfs een encounter met een van de giftigste slangen die je hier kan vinden in dit gebied. Gelukkig was de slang meer bezig met zijn oversteek dan met Remco.

Piccanini ponds staat iets meer vermeld in de gidsen. Dit is 1 grote Sinkhole, en ik ben er meteen achter gekomen dat ik nooit een cave diver word. Veels te eng! Had constant het gevoel dat er van alles naar boven zou komen zwemmen hhaha. Het was weer een super mooie pond en hebben er een minuut of 30 in gedobberd.

Kangaroo Island adventures...

Location: Kangaroo Island (KI)

Date 31 March – 4 April

Wikipedia  results for KI are: Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island. It is 112 kilometres (70 mi) southwest of Adelaide at the entrance of Gulf St Vincent. At its closest point to the mainland, it is 13 kilometres (8 mi) offshore from Cape Jervis, on the tip of theFleurieu Peninsula in the state of South Australia. The island is 150 km (93 mi) long and between 900 m (980 yd) and 57 km (35 mi) wide. 

On the 31^st we met Maaike at Cape Jervis which is the teeniest tiniest harbour village I have ever seen. It literally only has the ferry crossing. It was really good to see Maaike again after 7 weeks and we will travel together probably up to Sydney depending on the time.

When we heard the word Kangaroo island (KI) we thought.. YEY Roo’s everywhere! Unfortunately a big part of the island had suffered a massive bush-fire ( part of black-sunday 2009) which killed a lot of animals (so sad). 

The first day (cuz we arrived late) we camped directly next to the ferry. The only camping with hot water showers (without time limit) and boy did we need some after the 2 cold dives earlier that day. The temperature dropped a lot as well on the island and the sun vanished behind the clouds.

All of a sudden the campervan we first shared with 2 now had to hold 3 people and a tent plus air mattress, and not to forget a surfboard and a body board. I can here you thinking ... "How the"...Yup that is what we thought as well. Luckily the surfboard and body board could be tucked away on the roof and as the days went by we had a system going on of loading the car as efficient as possible :) 

The second day we went to Flinders park at the south-east end of the island, known for its many wild animals ( but also the part that was burned in 2009). We did a 10K hike and only saw geese and 3 walibi’s needless to say that we were slightly disappointed. That day we camped on a nice small secluded camping in the park. Just when we were enjoying some wine we heard some scratching.......2 possums (we think mommy and baby) were eating all the road kill ( mostly big bugs) of our car ( enough to feed a whole village of possums!). Later when we were preparing dinner at the BBQ area we even saw 2 Echidnas! Apparently the latter are kind of rare to see so up and personal. We also met a really nice couple who offered a room in their house when we would visit Melbourne.

 The next day we went to the north end of Flinders park but first we walked the “koala Walk”. YEY our first Koala’s. What a lazy animal that is! But so cute to see that little woollen creature sitting on the tinniest part of the three. They were all very high up though so close-ups weren't really an option. Kangaroo’s were also lying left right and centre here. What I didn't know is that a kangaroo is actually Nocturnal! It grazes from let’s say 5PM to midnight sleeps during the coldest part of the day, wakes up at 9-ish then grazes until 10-11 in the morning after which it rests throughout the hottest part of the afternoon. When we saw these boys they were definitely resting!

Koala?

That night we were the only ones to camp on the far end of the park. The nights are still freezing so we ended up in the camper van watching a movie. The next day we hiked a 9K trail to the lighthouse which was kind of pointless but we still got our morning exercise ;) We did notice that as soon as a true Australian has a little much to do they go kind of mad. I guess when you are used to doing 1 thing at a time it must be very overwhelming when all of a sudden you have to do 2 ;)  It is actually very amusing to see a stressed Australian ;)

Free camping

That day we continued our trip back to the “ferry-side” of the islands visiting some beaches on our way and enjoying the nice views. We even had a close encounter with a Koala. Mr Koala decided to cross the road just as we drove by. Thank god this Koala was wide away and jumped back on time. IT jumped in a small tree nearby and we had the chance of seeing a Koala really close. They are actually a lot browner and less cuddly than I thought they would be. But apparently the females are cuddlier and grey looking and this was most definitely an old bachelor.

We also visited the “remarkable rocks” which are as it says... remarkable. Even though it is not high-season it did feel like the busses were offloading by the minute. However we did manage to enjoy the scenery which was absolutely stunning.
